You want to read a damn fine Terry McGinnis interpretation? Read this one. A great look at how the injuries associated with Batman’s job are viewed by and impact a teenager that wasn’t groomed for the role since he was twelve. BRUCE STARTED REALLY LATE HERE.

The first time he’s hurt on the job – really hurt, not just bruised up a bit – he stays away from Dana for the next three days. It’s easy enough to do. He blames homework. His job. Her dad. He can tell she’s frustrated, but it’s better this way.

The wound – a gash along his ribs – heals up. Bruce recommends an ointment that smells awful but that is supposed to minimize scarring. Terry takes it without a word. He has a feeling it’s going to be one of those things that ends up being a regular part of his life. Like getting up in the morning and running ten miles before school (if he hasn’t already been out all night doing just that) or like lying to everyone he knows about where he’s been. A Batman ritual.

Like avoiding his girlfriend every time he gets a nick he can’t explain away. The bruises were easier, even if he’s starting to think that ‘I fell down the stairs’ is becoming a little transparent. Dana’s developed a habit of giving him this ‘yeah, right McGinnis’ look that implies she knows he’s not telling her everything and is waiting for the day when he feels like enlightening her.

It’s not a happy look, generally.

So once that scratch is healed up enough that he could pass it off from his days in Juvie, he sneaks in through her window while she gives him an incredibly unimpressed look.

“What? Don’t I pass muster?” He ruffles a hand through his hair in what he hopes is a savoire-faire manner and she snorts, rolls her eyes.

“You’re fine, McGinnis. But later, we’re having a talk about climbing in through a second story window.”

“Piece of cake,” he says genially. “Could do it with my eyes closed.”

“Yeah, given your track record with stairs? That’s what I’m afraid of.” Dana’s dressed for the night, in a pair of flimsy shorts and a shirt that’s too big for her (probably one of his) that slides off one shoulder. He can’t quite help the way his eyes chase the lines of her thigh, and judging by the way she shifts her leg, she’s well aware of where his attention is. A moment later, she pushes herself off her bed and comes over to where he’s perched on the windowsill.

“Dad’s downstairs. Try to keep it down.”

She grabs him by the front of his shirt and it occurs to him how much this whole ‘waiting to heal up between injuries thing before he gets to make out with his girlfriend’ thing is going to suck.
